Ingredients

Preparation

  1. Preheat the oven to 375℉.
  2. Heat a medium saucepan over medium-high heat and add ground beef. Cook, breaking it up into small pieces, until browned, about 5-7 minutes. Add the leek and garlic, and cook until the leek is soft but not brown, about 3-4 minutes. Add the tomato paste and stock, and mix well with a spatula.
  3. Add the bouquet garni, season with salt and pepper, lower the heat, and simmer gently for 20 minutes. Remove the bouquet garni. Set the meat aside and keep warm.
  4. Meanwhile, in a separate saucepan, bring salted water to a boil. Add the potatoes and cook for 20 minutes. Drain the potatoes and mash them with a potato masher.
  5. Heat the milk and gradually mix it into the potatoes. Mix in 2 tablespoons of butter and season with salt to taste.
  6. Butter a large baking dish with some of the butter and spread half the mashed potatoes on the bottom. Top with the meat mixture, then the remaining mashed potatoes. Sprinkle with the grated Gruyère and dot with small cubes of the remaining butter.
  7. Bake in the oven for 15 minutes and serve immediately.
